Car Finance Claims Guide
Are you owed money? If you bought a car, van, or motorbike on PCP or Hire Purchase (but not leasing) between 2007 and 2024, you might be due back thousands from hidden discretionary commission arrangements (DCAs).
1. Check Your Eligibility
Timeframe:
Your finance agreement should have been taken out between about April 2007 and 2024.
Type of Agreement:
Applies to Personal Contract Purchases (PCP) and Hire Purchase deals.
Does not include Personal Contract Hire (leasing) or genuine 0% interest deals.
Usage:
The vehicle must be for personal (or primarily personal) use.
Some business finance agreements might qualify if used mostly for non-business reasons.
Tip: If you’re unsure, use our free reclaim tool to check if your deal included a DCA.
2. Gather Your Information
Documentation:
Locate your finance agreement paperwork (or check your credit report/bank statements) for details such as your policy number, finance provider, and agreement dates.
Contact Details:
If you can’t find your documents, contact your car finance provider or dealership for the necessary information.
3. Lodge Your Complaint
Use the Free Tool:
Our online reclaim tool will guide you through a few questions about your finance details and personal information (name, DOB, address, etc.).
The tool generates a time-stamped email or letter that asks your provider to confirm whether your deal included a DCA and logs your complaint.
No Claims Firm Needed:
Doing it yourself may maximise payout. However, should you not feel comfortable, our experts can make the claim on your behalf.
4. Await a Response and Follow Up
Provider Response Time:
While the FCA is investigating until May 2025, finance firms have until December 2025 to deal with complaints.
What to Do If You Only Get an Acknowledgement:
Check your sent folder and spam/junk mail.
If you receive only an acknowledgement or no response after about a month, follow up with the provider.
Next Steps:
If the provider confirms your deal had a DCA, your complaint is logged.
If they say it did not but you suspect mis-selling, there’s a separate commission disclosure route.
If rejected, remember you can escalate your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
5. Additional Points to Remember
Multiple Claims:
If you had more than one eligible car finance agreement (with the same or different providers), you might need to lodge separate claims.
Claim Even if the Agreement is Over:
You can still claim if your finance agreement has ended, even if your car has been paid off or repossessed.
